Recently Insulspan SIPS have received some great feedback from our valued customers, here are some of their comments:

“If I had to do it all over again there would be no question in my mind that I would use Insulspan again.”

-Ryan Barlage

“Some people dream of exotic vacations; we dream of staying home and enjoying our Insulspan lake home.”

-Tom & Cathy Bloomer

“We are very happy with Insulspan, and we are confident that our home is top quality because of all the excellent care you gave at every point. You have a very happy customer here!”

-David & Susan Hart

“There were other SIP manufacturers out there but Insulspan seemed to have the best quality product. Another thing that put Insulspan above some of the rest is that they cut out the window/door openings and put wire chases in the SIP. This was very helpful as it required no cutting to construct the exterior of the home. It made sense to go with the Insulspan SIP because there is little or no waste during framing and the house is ultimately air tight, which is the one of the main factors in an energy efficient home.”

-Eric Holder, South Carolina

“Part of the advantage of Insulspan products is that they magnify the efficiency of the home. Insulspan SIPs allow us to achieve the airtightness to make the home and the HVAC system work correctly.”

-Richard Wyne

“Nine years later we wouldn’t do it any other way. I recommend this type of construction to anyone who wants to save substantial money on energy costs.”

-Bill & Lou McDonald

Blissfield, Michigan, November 8, 2010 — Blissfield-based Structural Insulating Panel System home manufacturer Insulspan, Incorporated received a national home building accolade with its Lakeside Green Cottage, capturing First Place, Green building using SIPs in the 2011 BSC Excellence in Home Design and Marketing Awards program. The honor was awarded by the Building Systems Councils (BSC) of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB)—a trade association that represents the concrete, log, modular, and panelized building system industries—at their annual awards program on November 8, 2010.

Sponsored by the NAHB Building Systems Councils, the BSC Excellence in Marketing and Home Design Awards has promoted excellence in the systems-built housing industry for more than ten years. All winners were announced at an awards luncheon in New Orleans, held in conjunction with the BSC SHOWCASE event—the leading trade show and conference based centered on the systems-built housing industry. Home manufacturers, builders and industry associates were among the groups recognized.

“This year’s award winners like Insulspan, Incorporated prove that despite a sluggish housing market, the systems-built industry is raising the bar in residential marketing and home design concepts,” said BSC Chairman Vic DePhillips, a modular manufacturer from Moosic, Pa. “Our award winners are adding credibility to their businesses and shedding a positive light on the building systems industry as a whole.”

The annual BSC Excellence Awards are judged by a panel of industry experts and companies like Insulspan were given praise for the quality of their submittals. The Lakeside Green Cottage is a model of sustainable construction that maintains the design & character of its historic community.

“It is truly an honor for the Lakeside Green Cottage to receive the BSC Excellence Award for Green Building with SIPs,” said Frank Baker, Lakeside Cottage Homeowner and PFB Board member “At Insulspan, we strive to provide innovative, practical housing solutions using systems-built technologies. This award shows the hard work and vision of Insulspan dedicated employees. It is a proud day for them.

Awardees were recognized for excellence in achievement in several marketing and design categories and covered a range of concrete, log, modular and panelized homes.
There were scores of entries submitted for award categories ranging from Outstanding Model/Sales Center, to Presentation of Home Plans and Best Web site.

For a complete list of winning companies and projects, including Insulspan and its Lakeside Green Cottage, visit www.nahb.org/2011bscawardwinners.

Award winners were announced to a crowd of nearly 200 systems-built industry professionals at the awards luncheon. Winners received plaques to commemorate their efforts. They will be featured in upcoming editions of NAHB’s e-newspaper, Nation’s Building News. Some projects will also be on display on the BSC Awards Wall at the 2011 International Builders’ Show in Orlando.

ABOUT THE BSC: The Building Systems Councils of the National Association of Home Builders is made up of manufacturing, builder, and associate members who advocate building with systems. Systems-built homes are constructed with concrete, log, modular, or panelized systems. They are constructed to the same code standards and reflect the same, and often enhanced, quality levels as any site-built construction. The advantage of systems-building is it’s done in a fraction of the time, with a fraction of the waste, reducing costly weather exposure. Many systems-built homes are inherently “green,” adding an environmentally friendly label to the product.

ABOUT NAHB: The National Association of Home Builders is a Washington-based trade association representing more than 175,000 members involved in home building, remodeling, multifamily construction, property management, subcontracting, design, housing finance, building product manufacturing and other aspects of residential and light commercial construction. NAHB is affiliated with 800 state and local home builders associations around the country. NAHB’s builder members will construct about 80 percent of the new housing units projected for 2010.

Insulspan, one of North America’s largest suppliers of structural insulating building products, has joined forces with AmeriSus – the American Sustainability Initiative LLC –to provide high-efficiency, affordable homes set for distribution this summer.

AmeriSus is challenging assumptions about home construction and ownership in America. Dedicated to the proposition that affordability, efficiency and sustainability are not mutually exclusive, AmeriSus is a series of kit homes – refined designs based on real-world solutions.

“We’re thrilled to be working with such a responsible and forward-looking company. By specifying SIPs for its entire line of homes, AmeriSus is making a strong statement that energy efficiency is non-negotiable and not just for the wealthy.”
Bruce Chorlton, Insulspan
Senior Vice President for Corporate Development

Insulspan will provide pre-fabricated SIP walls – two sheets of structural oriented strand board laminated to a core of solid expanded polystyrene insulation – that arrive on site with window openings, door openings and wire chases in place, allowing for rapid assembly and eliminating much of the waste of conventional framing. This also facilitates AmeriSus’s “just in time” delivery system, which provides components to the builder as they’re needed.

“SIPs are a perfect fit for our system. When the builder is ready for walls he doesn’t get a load of lumber, he gets walls – pre-cut, insulated and ready to erect. With the AmeriSus designs it is generally only four walls per floor.”
Tom Barton, AmeriSus
Architect , Co-Founder

The seven pre-engineered homes will also include heating and cooling systems, appliances and lighting, provided by a consortium of nationally recognized suppliers. This collaboration will allow AmeriSus to take advantage of volume purchasing discounts, which will be reflected in the homes’ price.

Home sizes range from 1,100 to 1,600 square feet, and are suitable for a variety of lots, including urban in-fill sites. AmeriSus homes are expected to sell for between $180,000 and $250,000.

Menards to supply Insulspan SIPS

After a rigorous review alongside other SIP manufacturers, Insulspan has been chosen as the exclusive SIP supplier to Menard’s, a chain of home improvement stores headquartered in Eau Claire, Wis. The privately owned company is thought to be the third-largest home improvement chain in the country, with 252 locations in 12 states.

CALGARY, ALBERTA, CANADA: PFB Corporation reports that there was a fire at its Riverbend Timber Framing plant in the late hours of Friday, October 15, 2010. The fire was brought under control by the Blissfield Fire Department with support from three other fire departments. The plant was not operating at the time of the fire and there were no employees or any other people on the site. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.

The fire department successfully contained the fire to the timber framing plant where part of the building was badly damaged by the effects of heat and smoke. The property was fully insured and representatives from the company’s insurers are on-site coordinating clean up activities and making the site safe.

It is important to note that the adjacent Insulspan SIPS Plant was unaffected by the fire except for some minor electrical disruptions which were fully restored during the weekend. Accordingly, the Insulspan SIPS plant resumed normal operations this morning at its regularly scheduled start-up time.

Management and staff at the Blissfield manufacturing site have worked tirelessly and relentlessly across the weekend doing whatever tasks necessary to speed up the process of restarting operations.

Contingency arrangements are underway to resume timber framing operations as soon as it is both practical and safe. Alternative building space located a short distance from the plant has been secured which will allow certain timber framing operations to resume immediately. Critical equipment used for processing timbers was located in the section of building away from the main fire and that equipment is currently being cleaned, inspected and assessed to determine its fitness for use. Early indications are that the equipment is not severely damaged.

Riverbend’s sales personnel are in the process of contacting all customers who have imminent delivery schedules, along with those customers that may be affected in the very near future, so that alternative arrangements can be made. Everything possible is being done to meet customers’ expectations and the company is committed to restoring normal operations as soon as possible.

Vice President & Chief Financial Officer
PFB Corporation

What a great turn out! Luckily it did not rain.

The Archetype for a Sustainable House was a national design competition organized by the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority and the Design Exchange. The challenge was to design a single family home that demonstrated the best in environmentally sustainable design and would be a model for mass-produced housing development. Terrell Wong (Stone’s Throw Design Inc.) and Anne Stevens (FORTarchictect Inc.) saw this as their opportunity to make a statement, express their hopes and desires and make a difference. BUILDING BLOCKS was their response to the competition brief, and earned first place in the competition.

In partnership with BILD the TRCA is currently building the home in an Blitz Build. Volunteers and donations from businesses are combining to help build our dream. This email is to keep you updated on the daily progress and highlight the great people involved.

When a client approached me about an energy efficient home I did alot of research & interviewed many companies claiming to have the best product for energy efficiency. I discovered MM&I Construction and Design, Inc. with the Insulspan SIP product and went to Nashville to meet with them. They put me in a comfort zone as they talked about the benefits of the Insulspan SIP homes and how they could support me in the construction process.

There were other SIP manufacturers out there but Insulspan seemed to have the best quality product. Another thing that put Insulspan above the rest is that they would cut out the window/door openings and put wire chases in the SIP. This was very helpful as it required no cutting to construct the exterior of the home. It made sense to go with the Insulspan SIP because there is little to no waste during framing and the house is ultimately air tight, which is one of the main factors in an energy efficient home.

I have built 2 Insulspan SIP homes with MM&I and they were very helpful throughout both projects. MM&I helped to correct all drawings and made sure that they complied with all local codes. MM&I provided assistance in planning each project from start to finish and quickly responded to any questions that I had.

They walked me through step by step as to how the home should be constructed. They were also on site as the construction took place to help with any problems. Upon the completion of both projects the homes received energy start certification, which was very easy with the air tight SIP construction. Also, the Insulspan SIP home is much stronger than a stick framed house. It would take a lot to take one down.

I highly recommend that anyone considering building an energy efficient home give MM&I a call. MM&I works with Insulspan to guarantee a great home.
